This time, Microsoft is apparently going to work with their Windows 8. Their research centers around the world are developingtechnologies for the future of the operating system.
The atmosphere at the Conference of the Microsoft PDC(Professional Developers Conference) initially seemed bright. But,then face Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and WindowsLive Division, became petrified. "What do you plan for the newWindows 8?", asked a reporter. Sinofsky was silent for a minute. The reporter repeated the question. Finally, Sinofsky said, "I'm notsaying anything. Windows 8? That you are saying, not me."Microsoft still refused to comment although some details areleaked to the public. However, details are only concerned with theinterface changes, not the technology behind it.
Although Microsoft seemed silent, internally they are concentratedwith Windows 8. Based on the leak of their employees, there aretwo scenarios for expedited release of Windows 8. In his blog, adeveloper says July 1, 2011 as the beginning of the LifecycleSupport. Currently, he is no longer working at Microsoft. Another source, who comes from a presentation, revealed that theschedule of RTM (Release to Manufacturing) Windows 8 around the year 2012.
One reason for Microsoft to not comment about Windows 8 mightbe caused by trauma Vista.
Many are hoping Windows 8 to deliver the right technology at thetime. Apparently, the pressure appears due to the success ofWindows 7 itself, to the extent that the user does not want the version of Windows that is more than Windows 7. According toForrester Research, only one percent of all firms in the U.S. andEurope who want to skip Windows 7 to wait for the next version. The rest, 99 percent would request that Microsoft did not rush toreplace Windows 7 be Windows 8.
It is not surprising that a Microsoft employee through his blog(currently, the blog postings have been removed) revealed thatWindows 8 is completely different and operation of the computer will be a revolution. Number of desire for change is a necessitybecause the hardware platform for Windows now increasinglyeroded. Mini computer, ranging from smartphones to iPad, currently dominate the market and many of them are no longerusing Intel processors, but the ARM processor can not runWindows.
For Windows 8, Microsoft should make a bigger change.Guidelines are needed for it already available thanks to theirresearch projects scattered all around the world. They only apply to live alone. At least, there are four projects that attract Microsoft for the future of Windows.
Barrelfish operating system: The road on all hardware
"We just wanted to see whether this system to function", explained Andrew Baumann (developer) on Barrelfish operating systemdeveloped collaboratively with the University of Zürich. The advantage lies in multikernel Barrelfish. Multikernel designed to run on multiple processors at once and work with other processors, such as the GPU from the graphics card. Developers refer to them as Multikernel OS concepts, different than the monokernel onWindows, Mac OS, and Linux.
